Coincidentally, both sites are now owned by my alma maters: the College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Cortland College. Over seventy people showed up for my talks and I was very grateful for their enthusiasm and interest. The sorority sisters from Sig Rho and Arethusa at Cortland College have been visiting Camp Huntington annually for years and were some of my biggest fans of the Durant saga. The Ecological Center in Newcomb, once home of Collis P. Huntington's son Archer, is on 15,000 acres of land called Huntington Forest Preserve. The facilities there are excellent for research and the trails behind the Visitor Center are worth a stop if you are in the area.
I had the privilege to visit two sites in the Adirondacks where William West Durant built camps that are now owned by the State University of New York. I was invited to talk to the public about my books on the Durant family. I discussed the relationship between William West Durant and Collis P. Huntington - outlined in this blog. Although William built these camps, they were both eventually bought by Collis P. Huntington, one for himself and one for his son Archer.
